What IT will ask before installing anything

• Outbound only. The collector makes outbound HTTPS connections to app.meterbeam.com. There are no inbound ports, no VPN tunnel, and no remote access to your network.
• Read-only SNMP. It reads printers with SNMP v1/v2c on UDP 161 using a read-only community. It never changes device settings.
• No document data. It sees page counters, supply levels, model and serial numbers, and status codes. It never sees print jobs or document contents.

A one-hour rollout

1. Pick the host. Any always-on Windows or Linux machine that can reach the printer subnets. A server or a desktop that never sleeps; not a laptop.
2. Check SNMP. Many newer Canon, HP, and Xerox models ship with SNMP v1/v2 turned off. Turn on read-only access before you start, or the device simply won't show up.
3. Install and watch discovery. The collector scans each local /24 and lists every device that identifies as a printer. Most fleets fill in within minutes.
4. Name and place devices. Add locations and departments now. It's what makes alerts and chargeback reports useful later.
5. Set the alerts. Route offline and low-toner alerts to whoever actually swaps cartridges, and leave the rest of the team alone.

Chargebacks, budgets, and lease true-ups

Meter history is the piece IT teams don't know they need until finance asks. Can I monitor printers without a print server?

Yes. Fleet monitoring reads the printers directly over SNMP, so it doesn't care whether jobs go through a print server, direct IP, or a cloud print service. It also doesn't see document contents, only counters, supply levels, and status.
